Descriptif

Longobardo (1559-1654), Italian Jesuit and successor to Mateo Ricci, changed his opinion on Chinese philosophy and religion and initiated the Chinese Rites Controversy. His work On Some Question of Chinese Religion has been translated into Portuguese, Latin, Spanish, French and English. It discussed Zhu Xi’s thought seriously and defined the feature of Chinese religion as a superstition, against the Riccian definition of Humanism. The French edition published in 1701 started the debate on the Question of Rites in Paris, and spread the doctrines of Li Xue 理学 among the European philosophers such as Leibniz or Voltaire. This lecture is trying to discover how Confucianism ideas extended to Europe in early modern time.
