Born 1963, actually holder of the chair of Byzantine Studies at Freie Universitaet Berlin. Specialised in the relations between Byzantium and the Oriental neighbouring cultures. Recently, writing about the origins of Islam on the Byzantine borders. Author of Koine und Diglossie, 1994; Übersetzung und Rezeption.
