Zi Ka Wei and its Museum T’ou-Sè-Wè – based on the pronunciation in Shanghainese dialect – located in the west of the former French Concession and run by French Jesuits, was one of the origin of Modern culture in Shanghai. It introduced in China the newest of scientific studies on astronomy, nature, biography, Sinology. European kinds of fine arts, such as oil painting, sculpture, stain glass and furniture making started and spread nationwide. It laid a foundation for metropolitan culture in Shanghai, and created a model of Shanghai that European and Chinese arts have integrated naturally as one and the same model. This lecture is trying to discuss the local modernity of Shanghai related to the theory of multi-culturalism.
