Modélisation de la dynamique non-linéaire des états de mer océaniques

L’exposé vise à donner un aperçu des recherches en cours au sein du Laboratoire d’Hydraulique Saint-Venant  et en collaboration avec des chercheurs externes, sur le thème de la modélisation et de la simulation numérique des vagues et des états de mer océaniques et côtiers. L’intérêt est notamment porté sur les effets non-linéaires dans la dynamique d’évolution des états de mer réels.

Après un rappel des principes des deux grandes classes de modèles de vagues (modèles à phases moyennées et modèles à résolution de phase), on considère en premier lieu, le cas du domaine océanique et des mers continentales à l’échelle desquels l’approche à phases moyennées est pertinente (modèles spectraux d’états de mer basés sur l’équation d’Hasselmann, de type WAM, SWAN, TOMAWAC).

Les travaux récents ont concerné le calcul des interactions non-linéaires résonnantes de 3ème ordre en grande profondeur d’eau, déterminantes pour modéliser l’évolution du spectre de variance de l’état de mer. Des résultats d’application issus de cette méthode de calcul améliorée sur la forme générale du spectre (structure fréquentielle et directionnelle) et sur sa dynamique d’évolution temporelle sont également présentés, et confrontés à des données expérimentales ou des analyses théoriques.

La dynamique d’évolution des états de mer est également étudiée suivant une approche à résolution de phase, fondée sur les équations d’Euler irrotationnelles, résolues par une méthode spectrale d’ordre élevé (méthode HOS pour « High Order Spectral »), en profondeur finie ou infinie. Cette modélisation permet notamment de mettre en évidence et d’étudier les instabilités de modulation (ou instabilités de Benjamin-Feir), qui sont une des causes pouvant conduire à la formation de vagues scélérates (« rogue waves » ou « freak waves »). Les effets de la directionalité de l’état de mer et la profondeur d’eau relative sur les paramètres statistiques du champ de vagues (skewness et kurtosis) et sur la distribution de l’élévation de surface libre sont étudiés au travers de simulations numériques Enfin, des premiers résultats sont présentés sur la comparaison des deux modèles d’évolution du champ de vagues, de façon à analyser les effets relatifs des interactions résonnantes et non-résonnantes, et à caractériser les échelles de temps d’évolution du spectre. Ces dernières applications permettent de mettre en exergue des perspectives de recherche sur la thématique d’intérêt.

Michel Benoit est  directeur du Laboratoire d'Hydraulique Saint-Venant, unité de recherche commune entre EDF R&D, le Centre d'Etudes Techniques Maritimes et Fluviales (CETMEF) et l’Ecole des Ponts ParisTech (ENPC), créée le 15 janvier 2008 par une convention de collaboration entre ces trois tutelles.
