Conférence donnée par Eric d'Hoker dans le cadre du Séminaire de physique 2012-2013.

Gauge/gravity duality is a conjectured correspondence between certain strongly coupled quantum field theories in 3 or 4 space-time dimensions, and theories of general relativity in higher dimensions. The duality was discovered and originally developed for systems with relativistic invariance. It has since become clear that the duality extends to certain non-relativistic systems, thereby paving the way for applications to condensed matter physics. In particular, the temperature and entropy of a thermal state in quantum field theory correspond to the Bekenstein-Hawking temperature and entropy of an associated black hole on the gravity side. An introduction to the duality will be presented, and applications to quantum criticality and other emergent phases will be invoked to illustrate the correspondence.
