Arrian and His Pseudographs : the multiplication of a polygraph. Notes on the pseudepigraphic Periplus Ponti Euxini and Periplus Maris Erythraei
A prolific and varied writer, Arrian enjoyed a fame that went beyond his own production. His historical, geographical and philosophical interests in the East, from the expedition of Alexander to the conquests of Trajan and Hadrian, contributed to the attribution to him of a Periplus maris Erythraei and a dialogue between Alexander and the Brahmans, as well as an apographic Periplus Ponti Euxini that usurped the fame his original report on the Black Sea. To emphasize Greek colonization and Byzantine control over the coasts of the Pontus Euxinus, Arrian was indeed the perfect mask behind which to hide.
